Try to find a more innocent and precious tradition than the Swiss Miss Royalty—part of Swiss Days in Midway, Utah. You won't. Guaranteed.
The annual reign of cuteness begins with a pageant, where the Swiss Miss and her attendants are selected. This year, the Swiss Miss is Ella Ballstaedt.
Ella and the rest of her Swiss Royalty—all age 10 to 13—serve as ambassadors of Midway City by performing at community events and participating in the Swiss Days parade, where they smile, wave and even perform a alpin jig.
Swiss Days is one of the largest festivals in Utah. A tradition since the 1940s, the annual two-day festival serves to pay homage to the early pioneers who settled in Midway because it reminded them of their homeland, Switzerland.
Each year, 100,000 or so folks flock to Midway to eat Swiss cheese sandwiches and scones, to take in entertainment, including, of course, yodelers and alp horns, and enjoy the parade, which meanders down Main Street. At the parade, community members craft artful floats, kids pedal their bikes, folks ride their horses, familial generations walk side. The Swiss Miss and her Swiss Royalty are the flower in the cap of the event.
Here's Ella's adorable bio from the Midway Swiss Days website:
Ella is the perfect child! She does what shes asked & tries hard to make others happy. She discovered the love of music & for the Cello at an early age & enjoys a close relationship with her cello teacher… one of her favorite people in the world! Ella loves to read, spend time with family & friends, snow & waterski, draw pictures & play the piano. Ella knows how to recognize people who need special attention & love. She has the ability to look past herself & make sure those around her are happy. She would like you to know that she is so excited to be representing the Swiss Miss, it’s a dream come true for her.
The Swiss Royalty is comprised of attendants Elizabeth Ballstaedt, Rosalyn Giese, Ellie McDonald, and Kimber Webb.
