Sister Dottie S. Dixon is on a mission, actually several missions, and she says her biggest ones currently are “Family Preservation, and Acceptance of All, with Stoppin’ Bullyin’, Belittin’, and Injustice comin’ in a pretty close second.” The venerable sister from Spanish Fork, Utah, is a 10th generation Mormon, the mother of a gay son, and a huge activist “fer the minoritized and miniaturized peoples of the world.” A good-will ambassador for organizations that advocate for human equality, inclusion, and justice, Sister Dottie has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.
The character—played by Charles Frost—brilliantly works from an inside-out perspective for change in Utah. Modeled after Frost’s feisty Mormon mother, Sister Dottie is “plum full a dicey opinions, wisdoms and sage advice” about everything from gay rights, women’s empowerment, homelessness and minority affairs—“I jist love em' ALL-- rilly, truly I do,” Sister Dottie says.
As such, she has been given myriad awards, including being named Best Utahn by City Weekly and “A One Woman Artistic Force in Salt Lake Magazine’s Best of the Beehive, in addition to being bestowed numerous Best Actor awards state-wide and being recognized nationally for her activism in Utah. The list of organizations that she has helped fundraise for is long and impressive: OUTreach Resource Center, The Salt Lake Men’s Choir, Salt Lake Unitarian Church, Utah Pride Center, Equality Utah, HRC, Humane Society of Utah, YES (Youth Empowerment Summit), Salt Lake Film Center, SLCC, Drinking Liberally, Women's Homeless Shelter, RDT and KRCL.
Indeed, Sister Dottie is on a mission for change in Utah, and it’s hands-down the most fun form of activism to watch.
