Bike Prom is better than real prom for so many reasons.
The annual shindig is a fundraiser for the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective, a non-profit organization that sells refurbished, fixed-up, and affordable bicycles to the community, educates locals on bike maintenance and safety, and advocates for bike-friendly laws.
Also, at Bike Prom, your acned, self-conscious 17-year-old self is out of the equation. And finally, people wear tuxedo-pant cut-off shorts. You’re in, right?
Photographer Anna Day has run Bike Prom's photo booth for three of the event’s four years. She gives us a look into the event, and describes why she loves the Collective so much.
The mission statement of the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective is to promote cycling as an effective and sustainable form of transportation and as a cornerstone of a cleaner, healthier, and safer society. Additionally, the Collective provides refurbished bicycles and educational programs to the community.
Day aligns with this mission whole-heartedly. “I am a nurse, a photographer, and a biker. This mission supports who I am,” she says. “I want a cleaner, safer healthier society to enjoy my passions, my work, and my life. I feel passionately about sharing what I can to help promote this mission."
Day will be photographing Bike Prom 2014 and donating all proceeds to the Collective this year, as she has in years past. She also adds that she is grateful for the volunteers and staff who organize Bike Prom and run the Collective.
The fourth annual Bike Prom will be held at Pierpont Place May 10 at 8 p.m. Find out more information at BicycleCollective.org.
As a nurse practitioner, my life’s work is in medicine. As an artist, my life’s passion is photography. Through the two, I have experienced the powerful interplay between art, science, and nature. I believe how we choose to focus on something remains with us, whether it becomes beautiful and empowering or unpleasant and disheartening. I choose to focus on things that inspire me and, I hope, inspire others. Feeling this connection to nature and beauty, all through the lens of art and science, can help us heal ourselves and, in so doing, support healing our world. A portion of proceeds from all of my sales are donated to organizations dedicated to preserving the environment.
